This is a declaration by the UN supporting worldwide DECRIMINALISATION of homosexuality

NOT supporting gay marriage

NOT forcing everyone to wear rainbows and have teh gay sex

This is a declaration to prevent gays being fined, imprisoned or executed for BEING GAY

OK? Because countries like, say, Iran have a nasty habit of executing us gay folk and most civilised people would rather they didn't ok?

In fact, to quote the statement:
"to take all the necessary measures, in particular legislative oradministrative, to ensure that sexual orientation or gender identitymay under no circumstances be the basis for criminal penalties, in particular executions, arrests or detention."

Wow, objectionable, isn't it?

SO WHY THE HELLS DID THE USA, ALONE OF ALL WESTERN NATIONS, NOT SIGN IT?!

Because the current US leadership are the biggest batch of homophobes on the planet.

Okay, I realize this was hyperbole for effect, probably, but realistically: calling Bush et al the 'biggest batch of homophobes on the planet' downplays the circumstances faced by gays outside of the Western world. Sure, the US Republicans want to prohibit gay marriage, and sure, that's bad.

But they don't advocate HANGING them.

Have to keep perspective, or risk forgetting just how bad things really can be.

Heh.

Frankly, I suspect they would advocate hanging them if they thought they could get away with it. Public opinion and US law wouldn't let them, but that doesn't make them any less hateful.

I know what you mean, and yes it's harder for gays in some other countries, but hatred is hatred. I've heard plenty of people here in this country talk about how they wish they could do such things to gays.

Aye, oh they'd want to. Oh you KNOW they want to. And that's the most terrifying thing - that they want to so much that they can't even sign the OK to this?

Now now, I'm quite sure they'd be very happy to get out their rope - they just can't. Poooooor little bigots. It's because we oppress them you know :P

Gah it's just... well, it's not like it's asking much is it? I mean if it were in favour of partnership rights or something i could see America opposing it in homophobic terror.

But just making homosexuality non-punishable? I mean, it's not like America would have to change anything! They've actually given up "look how evil Iran is" points for the sake of... what? Reminding gays that no matter how uppity American homosexuals get they're pining for the chance for a good ol' round up and executin'

There are still a lot of laws on the books in various states that make (or make sexual acts that are "supposedly" practiced via) homosexuality illegal.

It is ridiculous but true.

This on top of the crap going on in California (Starr) is just making my day.

*sigh*

It's just stunning that they'd go this far?

Forgive, nay I pity because having freaks like that in control and having dominant power? Would scare me

I'm actually kinda shocked. I mean here was a chance for the US to say "look how barbaric Iran is!" and all they had to do is sign a resolution resolving what THEIR OWN LAWS already says...

...and they didn't? Hatred for homosexuals is THAT strong that America would make herself look so incredibly bad, would give up moral highground and condemnation points for the sake of not agreeing to what they're already legally bound to?!

Probably for the same reason Prop 8 passed in California and for the same reason there is now a motion to nullify all the marriages made before the Proposition passed; we have in our nation a large percentage of tall, mature-looking eight year olds who just feel all oogie when the gay is mentioned. IT MIGHT BE CATCHING.

I think any adult who feels threatened by gay people, no matter how much fancy-dancing justification they pull from the Bible, probably needs therapy to determine why what other people are doing in a consensual situation threatens them. Also, they need to be reminded that their beloved Leviticus also states adulterers ought to be stoned to death and what in that era was considered adultery. Would Sarah Palin (I loathe her) throw the first stone at her pregnant daughter?

People are fucking idiots, that's why. I am disgusted all over again.

It's just so insanely maddening. Good gods how can hatred be so huge and so permeating the government to an extent that it will actively harm the country's standing and even avoid a chance to score points against Iran for the sake of expressing hatred? Not even changing laws or opening up themselves to legal challenge -it would change NOTHING except give themselves a chance to express hate?

I really do believe it's rampant immaturity.

People in this country go nuts if they see a naked breast, as if most people don't have at least one nipple. They follow the entertainment press snickering over who's doing whom and when as if half the people they know aren't doing exactly the same thing. The need to control the actions of other stems, I think, from a combination of that eight year old 'ewww, oogie, ha ha ha' reaction and the idea that people whose lifestyles are not the same as theirs might be having more fun.

Most people think gay is all about sex. I'll assume...actually, I've known some gay people who are exactly the same as straight people in the sense that any breathing individual of the preferred gender is a potential fuck buddy. But I know there are gay people who are exactly like straight people in that they have preferred types or some actual standards other than 'breathing' (I hear Eddie Izzard saying 'breathing optional' and sadly that exists too) or who are utterly devoted to their partners.

Which eludes a lot of people. They think all gay people are horny machines and, funnily enough (this is funny) they worry gay people want them bad. That's funny because nobody wants them bad and I don't know too many gay people who are that desperate.

I also suspect they think gay sex is better. Their problem. Get a therapist, buy a book, get a vibrator if your sex life is inadequate.

But ultimately I think America is one of the most twisted and uptight nations in existance.

In funny 'karma's a bitch' news, Sarah Palin, who decided her daughter's pregnancy problem was solved when she got engaged now gets to wonder if the future mother in law will be out of prison for the wedding. Six felony drug charges on the baby's paternal grandmother. I'd pay money to be at the first big family holiday meal after the trial. Seriously.

That may be a factor too, really. The current administration is on the way out and they know it. They might as well go ahead and be as petty and spiteful in every way as they can while it lasts, right?

Actually for that to happen they'd all have to be christian and they'd all have to sign that and allow gay marriage. Hell is a christian concept at least in that context.

If you're not willing to work to make America better leave if you want you're just baggage.

I don't give a fuck about the UN or it's opinion. It's a distraction setup by the US among others to make other countries feel good but it does nothing of substance.

Substantial change will not come quickly nor cheaply. And that change can be overridden as California is finding when you make bad choices or are not diligent. They're turning into a south american hell hole pretty fast but are a bit psychotic about it.
