Marriage between people of the same sex is now legal here.

That's right, gays can marry in the UK now. I'm going to be celebrating for some time, possibly until passing out.

The first marriage was today (the usual 15 day waiting period being waived because one of the grooms is terminally ill. So bonus not only for allowing gay marriage but for reognising all the compassionate grounds straight away).

Added happy squee for me? There's no real opposition. Oh, religious groups have done their usual squick, but seriously, it's just passed really casually. You ask most people and they just shrug and say "so?"

Got to love that.

I know this is an old post, but I thought this'd be kinda poignant to the straight people just going "so?".

I hadn't even heard about it. Your journal is the first place I've seen it mentioned. Around 30 mins ago. Things were so casual that any protests didn't even reach our ears up in Scotland (which makes me glad :D).

So anyway, congrats on this (very, very belatedly) to you and anyone else it applies to :)

Thanks. It surprised me how little opposition there was. I think that was the major thing - people just kind of shrugged and said "of course." or "ok." and got on with things.
