Blair lost.
His little police state proposal failed.
It failed badly.
Even though he dragged poor Brown from Israel (probably insulting Israel, the EU and G8 in the process - wow, that took some doing) he still lost.
Not only did he loose, he lost by more votes than many of his bills have passed by.
I am so very happy about this, I'm going to celebrate for an age.
the bill in question was Blair's terrorism bill. It had proposals for clamping down on religious hate speach and preventing people 'glorifying terrorism' (whatever THAT means) but the objectionable part of it was the right of police to detain people for 90 days. No trial. No accountability. No evidence. No crime. No appeal. No review. No compensation. 90 days. 3 months of your life, gone and nothing you can do.

Date: 2005-11-12 02:11 pm (UTC)The police politicised themselves. NEVER have the police got involved in politics! EVER! It is obscene that this precedent has been broken and I've been filling police inboxes with my disgust - and further disgust that they would treat our rights so casually. I will not trust nor co-operate with a police for that endorses such vile measures.
Thank gods it fell apart. MPs do still have a social conscience. Actually, no, I do think that the Conservatives likely voted against as much to undermine Blair as anything - they were all behind this kind of law when Thatcher was in power and the Troubles were rumbling.

Date: 2005-11-12 02:48 pm (UTC)The London attack was terrible, but compared to the history of this country and what our ancestors endured it was minor. I feel ashamed that we are the ones who are willing to throw away the stubborn, prideful courage that makes us British and drives us to carry on as if nothing's happening. I don't want to be part of the society that finally throws away that.
