Orientation: Bisexual with strong preference for other men.
Origin: The Camaalis home estate (very private property if you know what’s good for you) in Yorkshire, England. But spent considerable time in the other Camaalis estates.
Significant Other(s): Rick.
Quirks: Angst. Sorry, that came out wrong. ANGST!!!!! On a less dramatic side - his many nightmares and the simple power that his magic grants him means he needs very little sleep, and takes no pleasure in the little he does get. As such he is an obscenely early riser and utterly unsympathetic towards those who aren’t. His hair and clothing is something of an obsession (c’mon, he’s hunted, needs to hide and he keeps his hair ankle length? Definitely an obsession). Oh, he has absolutely NO fiscal responsibility. Camaalis is stupidly wealthy, on the run he had a... cavalier attitude towards personal property, he’s never learned how to balance a book. Not that he’s materialistic at all (except clothes and hair care products) he just assumes there is always more money when you need it.
Background: Darren was born to one of the few major magical organisations left in the world. Clan Camaalis is a product of literally millennia of selective breeding (and selective inbreeding) to ensure the greatest magical potential for the next generation. The result is that the Camaalis family has such a degree of magic in their blood that it would be extremely unusual for one of them NOT to have considerable magical talent. Added bonus - Clan Camaalis is not only one of the few remaining magical organisations left in the world but also the largest, and likely, most powerful (something highly resented by more than a few other organisations). As with all young Camaalis, on Darren’s 6th naming day he was the subject of a powerful ritual in order to establish what his magical talent (or in the case of most Clan Camaalis, talentS) would be. The results were somewhat disappointing. Revealed as a Necromancer, a Daemonologist, and worst of all, a Sorcerer, Darren was shunned by his family. Rather than killing him out right, his father, through arrogance or love, decided to try and ‘change’ Darren. Several years of the most extreme methods passed, but the dark magic still remained. Finally on Darren‘s 14th name day, the Clan ordered his death.
Darren was handed over to his uncle, Alexei, for disposal (and the harvesting of any useful parts - waste not want not after all). Sentence was somewhat delayed as Alexei used Darren to further a few of his own ambitions... and delayed even more as Alexei took advantage of the situation to sate his perversions.
Age 18 Darren could take no more, despite internalising a constant litany of self-hatred, he was past endurance. He fled, and has been fleeing ever since; leaving a trail of slaughtered innocence in his wake.
Employment: At the minute he’s professionally mooching off Rick (hee, he‘s a Houseboi). He’s trying to set up a magical supply business.
Appearance: The first thing anyone ever notices about Darren is his hair - as with most Camaalis, his hair is black. No, REALLY black. It’s also thick, sleek, shiny and the envy of every shampoo model. The idea of cutting it is sacrilege - so he’s let it grow to ankle length. Next, you generally notice his height - Darren is short (and rather irritated about it) only 5’4”, this, coupled with his large eyes, tends to make him look at lot younger than he is. Oh the eyes. Think of the richest, darkest sapphire. Or the deepest, stillest pool of water. Now put them together and you have something approaching the Camaalis eyes. On Darren they’re especially effective - a rather unhealthy lifestyle sustained more by dark magic rather than food and drink has left him with the complexion of an exsanguiniated Oil of Olay model. The whole effect is something beautiful, and slightly frightening and unreal.
Distinguishing Characteristics: The hair, the eyes, the skin. His magic. His angst. His pet. Just about everything really. In fact he has precious few ‘normal’ characteristics.
If You Could Pick a Theme Song for This Character, It Would Be: *groans* I am bad at this... I have such weird tastes in music! But: “Objects in the Rear View Mirror” - Meat Loaf. “Crawling” - Linkin Park.
Sin-of-Anger: Ah, Darren has a temper. Well, no that’s not exactly true. He’s quite difficult to anger but he doesn’t have any middle gears. He’s rarely irritated or angry - he’s murderously furious and ready to kill, or calm and happy. Basically, though it’s generally hard to anger him (though loss, and people he classes as immoral can spark him off very easily), when he is angry something seriously bad’s going to happen.
Sin-of-Envy: Where to start? Anyone who can have a family. Anyone whose power is pure. Anyone who doesn’t have to suffer and fight every day for the sure and certain knowledge that you can never win and the next day you’ll face the same fight eternally until you loose or die. Oh yeah, definitely envious.
Sin-of-Pride: Hmmm... well he’s got all these evil powers which he’s ashamed of... he’d never admit to being PROUD. But at the same time, he IS powerful. He KNOWS he’s powerful. He KNOWS Clan Camaalis is the best, and he KNOWS that he can turn you into an interesting laminate on the pavement.
Sin of Gluttony Really? No. He sometimes goes days without eating or drinking, and doesn’t especially care what it is when he does (except to irritate Rick about his tastes).
Sin-of-Lust: Rick. Rick. RICK. Oh, and he’s a kinky masochist as well.
Sin-of-Avarice: Not really, materialism just isn’t his thing. Now hand him the hand made Italian suit.
Sin-of-Sloth: He sometimes spends days moping and meditating, trying to get his head together, don’t know if that counts.
Virtues: Surprisingly, morality, kinda. Yes, he may commit random atrocities, but he never MEANS to, and he always feels bad about it. Clan Camaalis, for all their internal squabbles and their squabbles with other magical organisations, have very definite views on people who harm others. Darren generally feels he’s not in a position to judge, and his moral compass is a little off at times when the power is strong, and he’s afraid to draw attention to himself - but if he sees someone in trouble and something seriously NOT right happening, he will intervene. And gods save the culprit.
Hmmm... I am informed that vigilantism is not a virtue. Damn.
