Please gods tell me you weren't in Spain today, or nowhere near Madrid.

I'm HERE!

Dun worry pal. i'm in Barcelona. No where near Madrid. Thanks for worrying. *yes will give hugs of reassurance* It's been all over the news. I was tempted to run and give blood but it wasn't needed anymore. It's been horrible. I was in BCN watching at lunch time what happened in 9-11 and it brough back alot of ghosts. I can tell ya I won't be taking the trains any time soon. I'm here man. Hopefully a good long while.

Ah, good, Catalunia is miles from Madrid.

It was kind of shaky, I left in the morning hearing there wre 60 dead and came home at night hearing the number had hit 190. I couldn't believe it.

I know. some are comparing it to 9-11, though I think there's little to compare it to other than surprise and horror. some are blaming it on ETA, but this doesn't quite look like them since prior the highest deathtoll in any of their hits was a mere 21. Not nearly 200. There's a sketchy report that the al-kaeda(sp?) are claiming they did it. other than the Date being the 11th of march, i'm not sure what to think really. I don't quite see the point of this particular hit other than seeing how many they could get. For ETA it seems they made a record in deaths and are gonna have the authorities hunting them down once and for all, which essentially this put the noose around thier neck. Or it's the Al-kaeda and this is small beans practice mayhem.

The bottom line is, it's tragic and people here are still in shock and mourning. I'd much rather focus on that rather then why or who.

I know the spanish govt is claiming ETA, but I'm not sure (a sad part of me thinks that the spanish govt would very much like it to be ETA what with elections coming up and all, not to mention it being the traditional 'enemy'.)

ETA, in many ways, worked like the IRA. This included, among other things, aiming to cause property damage, killing only those 'linked' to their causes and giving warnings before bombs went off so people could be evacuated (please note, I in know way support or condone the actions of either organisation, and find them quite deplorable - but I agree that mass death just isn't their thing). I don't say this is through any 'altruistic' motive, but because they needed to be feared, and they needed the support of their respective people (the Basques, the Irish); NOT to be hated and reviled but the nations at large and disowned by the people they purport to represent.

This will do the basques more harm than good.

At the same time, a London based arabic newspaper has received an e-mail from an Islamic militant group (not al'Quaida, we're making a grave mistake assuming all these groups are al'Quaida - we'll end up looking for the charging elephant so hard we miss the tiger sneaking up behind us, but it is linked to al'Quaida). I'm told the spanish have also found some qu'rans and an arabic tape in a linked location. Doesn't prove anything though - and the creation of the bombs

First, before any blame is laid, Spain needs to heal. I know what you meant with small beans compared to Sept 11, but it is easily comparable with Bali, and certainly the most devastating attack suffered by a western European capital for a long time.
