The Fall of Draconic Rule

The Earthmother and the Skyfather were disturbed, the world was not as it should be. They looked down upon their children and saw evil plotting freely, their children turned against each other and schemes wound round in schemes.

The looked down on the child of their Sixth Dragon that dwelled in the land and cried “Our Daughter, why do you allow these plots to run rampant? Why have you not exposed them to your Brother?”

The Child of the Sixth Dragon laughed. “I do not need to tell my brother these plots, for I and cunning and can use them to my own ends. I will use their plots to benefit me and mine, and rule from the shadows and the dark.”

The Skyfather raged and the Earthmother despaired, for the Sixth Dragon had fallen to Selfishness. “You have failed us, my child. You are not fit to reign or guide. Go to the dark places of the world never to rest again under the Sun”

Troubled, the Earthmother and the Skyfather looked further, to other realms within the world they had created and in grief they came to a land that was torn by despondency and pain, its land torn asunder and its resources plundered mindlessly.

They looked down on the child of their Fifth Dragon that dwelled in the land and cried “Our Son, why do you not cleanse the blights that afflict this land? Why do you not show people the joys and majesties of the wild and holy places?”

The Child of the Fifth Dragon snorted. “I will not risk my precious lands nor expose them to those who are unworthy of their majesty. I will hide them from lesser races and those worthy in my sight may gaze upon them.”

The Skyfather raged and the Earthmopther despaired, for the Fifth Dragan had fallen to Elitism. “You have failed us, my child. You are not fit to reign or guide. Go to your hidden places, for never again will you feel comfort in the company of others.”

The Earthmother and the Skyfather travelled on, to other realms they had created. There they found a land blackened and charred, the people hid and cowered in fear among the corpses of their dead.

They looked down on the child of their Fourth Dragon that dwelled in the land and cried “Our Daughter, what has passed here? What force has struck here that you could not fight?”

The Child of the Fourth Dragon roared. “It is I who struck here, for they angered me and did not show proper respect. I will not abide the weak and will not suffer their insults.”

The Skyfather raged and the Earthmopther despaired, for the Fourth Dragan had fallen to Wrath. “You have failed us, my child. You are not fit to reign or guide. Your temper will rule you as it has this day, and you will ever be a slave to your rage.”

The Earthmother and the Skyfather investigated further, to other lands beneath them. There they found a land were the people despaired and wailed, wracked with pain and plagued by fear. Where every soul was burdened with guild and punishment.

They looked down on the child of their Third Dragon that dwelled in the land and cried “Our Son, what has passed here? Where is your justice? What crimes have these people committed that they must be punished so?”

The Child of the Third Dragon growled. “They have failed time and again at what is demanded of them. They do not meet the basic standards I expect of them. They sin daily in a thousand petty ways and their lies fill my ears. I will not spend time judging each and everyone for their endless failings - all have failed. All are judged.”

The Skyfather raged and the Earthmother despaired, for the Third Dragan had fallen to Arrogance. “You have failed us, my child. You are not fit to reign or guide. Your Arrogance will ever be a bar to your sight just as it is a bar to your judgement - you will never be able to see to true worth of others.”

Yet further the Earthmother and the Skyfather ventured, to yet further lands under their hands. There they found a land where confusion reigned. Where even their children made mistakes beyond imagining and where no-one knew even the most basic ways of the world. Chaos reigned and the dragons floundered lost in a mire of contradictions and ignorance.

They looked down on the child of their Second Dragon that dwelled in the land and cried “Our Daughter, why are the people so ignorant? Why do you not share your knowledge with your brothers and sisters? Why do you not enlighten the people?”

The Child of the Third Dragon hissed. “I have laboured long for this knowledge. They do not know its worth nor respect it as I do. Why should I share what I have worked so hard for? Why should I teach those who cannot begin to understand? They are ignorant and will remain so for all I can achieve. My knowledge is my own.”

The Skyfather raged and the Earthmother despaired, for the Second Dragan had fallen to Secrecy. “You have failed us, my child. You are not fit to reign or guide. Your devotion to Secrets will ever cling to your heart, never will knowledge freely part your lips and curiosity will dog your steps.”

Finally, the Skyfather and Earthmother returned to the centre of their Realms and there they stopped in horror and despair. There they found a land more despoiled and torn than any they imagined. There they found people crushed and abused beyond tolerance. There they found a land that was a stranger to all things good.

The Skyfather wept and the Earthmother wailed. They cried to the son of the First Dragon, “Our Son, what have you done?”

The Child of the First Dragon smiled. “I am the First. I am the greatest. I am the strongest. My siblings were created to serve me. This world was placed under my dominion. I am the epitome of what all things strive to be. All here honour me. All here serve at my whims. I suffer no limits, no counsel, no criticism or insult. I am supreme, none may gainsay this.”

The Skyfather and the Earthmother wept and lamented, for Pride has taken their First Dragon. “And so, even you, the greatest of our children have failed us. Your Pride has consumed you. Your pride will eclipse all else, no other emotion will ever match it and they will wither and die in its shade. People will never look upon you with honour, only fear. You will never know respect and you will never truly reign - only dominate and terrify but to the end of your days you will hunger for the honour, respect and majesty you once had.”

The Child of the First Dragon roared, “I will not suffer this! I am Supreme, none may limit me - not even you.”

And the Skyfather and the Earthmother fell to Despair. In pain to their soul they turned their eyes from the world never again to look down on the world they had failed. And Dragonkind felt the departure of their parents and grieved, torn by a loss they had never imagined possible. In shame they withdrew from the world, cursed by their mourning parent’s and no longer fit to rule until they could redeem themselves and attract the Earthmother and Skyfather’s gaze back to the world they had abused.

I like this one! It does have a fitting ending. I kept losing track of which dragon was which though. Maybe there should be some mention of a color in there. Maybe not specifically the dragon's color but the dominant color of their world. Like "They looked down on the child of their Fifth Dragon that dwelled in the land that was once green and cried." Something like that so that there is an associative color cue. I also noticed that the first two dragons seem to be banished, but none of the others are. And they were banished into the places they were already familiar with. Is there a reason for that? Plus, where do the other dragons live? Would Red be banished to Deserts? or maybe Sun was banished to deserts to shine where no one lived to see his glory.

Maybe I'm just asking for things out of the air, but these thoughts occurred to me as I read and its your world. I'm curious about it.

Aye it needs a rewrite. It was one of those times when I had a thought and it was driving me mad and I was fighting it - and then it all SPLURGED onto the page. Each dragon needs to be more original

The dragons weren't banished per se, but their curses caused isolation. The Black dragons aren't excactly told to go live in caves - but they're photosensitive. Green dragons don't have to hang around in natural areas - but they get edgy and irritable if they share the company of others so naturally seek isolation. The gold dragon will usually hang around the edge of population centres - both repulsed by the fear everyone feels looking at him and desperately seeking the respect he hungers forThe silver dragon may seek secret and isolated spots to guard her knowledge - just as she will go just about anywhere to satisfy her curiosity

So none of them have been banished exactly - but their curses can force them to various locations

Splurged huh? hope you had napkins. ;)

I know what that's like though. Maybe indulge in some purely fluff writing dumping all kinds of description into the dragons themselves their different traits and then it'll be easier to step back and eyeball it for what is essential to mention to the story. Plus it's fun and I might even be inspired to draw some of those dragons. ^_^

Now that's incentive to splurge :) I thgink that the dragons all look very different from each other. I see the gold dragon as being large but crested and maned similar to an oriental dragon while having the shape of a european dragon.

Red will be a stereotypical european dragon, thickset.

Bronze more sinnuous and oriental. Green will have horns and spines. Hmm I have to think of this thing
