Now, I have a weakness and, I confess, a prejudice.

Accents. If I hear a strong accent my mind will conjure up an image of the person - no matter what i see, no matter how inaccurate, stereotypical or plain WRONG it is. This is a weakness and very unfair of me and I am sincerely working to correct this.

Mad Secretary is NOT HELPING.

See I had a new client today who was originally from (I THINK - I never asked because it was a little presumptious) Somerset. Rural Somerset.

My (unfair and deeply wrong mind) conjures up a... less than flattering mental image. I desperately try to purge this from my mind.

Huh, and my students decided today that you were out to convince people that stereotyping was ignorant.

It went pretty well, by the way. So far in their written responses, we're at 2 "Stereotypes are inevitable and there's nothing we can do about it" and 4 outraged rants against the above. I think things are going in a good direction.

Now I just have to teach them what "ignorant" means...

Yup, they're right, it is ignorant, which is why I try to stop it, though ingrained habits die hard. I think we can't always stop our habits, but we cna overrule them and recognise them as the problems they are

On the whole I form a mental image but then am smart enough not to follow on it. Image forms, rest of brain declares "yeah, that's kind of dumb" and works on ignoring the image until the actual person fills its place.

Then there's Mad Secretary, who delights in trying to distract me during my interviews. This isn't as bad as the pirate incident, at least.



Heee, nice to see it went well? It all went over well? Most people moving in the right direction is a major plus... a shame about the ignorant thing though :)
