The National Lottery is a relatively recent thing in our history. For a long time it was opposed because... well, actually I don't know why it was opposed but I think it largely came down to "gambling is bad and if we have the National Lottery people will gamble madly until they're homeless under a bridge clutching Hot Pix cards!!!!" or something of that nature.

The Lottery was eventually allowed because it was nicely spun as CHARITABLE. I underdstand that 20-30% of National Lottery Revenue goes to Charitable causes.

Tory Councillor Richard Eddy and the Daily Mail owned Bristol Evening News are not happy with where some of this money has gone.

Are they angry about the 16% going to sports? 16% going to the arts? The money spent on shoring up the exorbitantly expensive Royal Opera House? (Arts and sports can be worthy causes, yes, but I do think in terms of priority there are more important causes out there). Nooooo.

They object to the money going to EACH's REACH programme in Bristol.

EACH (http://www.eachaction.org.uk/) is an extremely good charity that works against homophobia. They offer training for organisations (employers, trade unions, etc etc) on homophobic issues, they offer support groups and a support line for victims of homophobia and help protect and reassure people who have been hurt by homophobia and they aid with the prosecution of homophobic crime. They are especially dedcicated to reaching out to young people who suffer homophobic bullying.

Homosexual teenagers have a suicide rate way above average for heterosexual teens. Homosexual teenagers are more likely to be homeless and are more likely to be sucked into the various traps of prostitution and drug use that comes with that. Homophobic bullying is a stain that can hit any homosexual - but for the kids it is devastating. We've probably all been there, and we all know how damaging it is, how alone we feel, how much the only one we seem the only homosexual in the world. We know how worthless we can feel, how alone and how easy it is to internalise hatred and destroy your own self-hate.

EACH saves lives.

Saving gay lives is considered an "outrageous waste of money" by the Tories it seems. Trying to give some level of comfort and self worth to gay teens is "Mistaken and Misguided."

Thank you Councillor Eddy for making it clear to us how the Tories really feel about gay people. Thank you for making it clear what a liar David Cameron is
