Some world building while I work through the fic. Camaalis keeps growing more and more detailed all around me and with them now in the heart of Camaalis territory I need to get some fo this stuff nailed down so I have a clue what's happening.
So, the Pillars - vital organisations or factions within Clan Camaalis
Pillars are organisations within Camaalis that handle tasks that always need doing - like maintaining the Camaalis fortunes, finding new Magicians, tending to the family genealogy, protecting magical sites etc. There are several Pillars. Basically they are task forces that are permanent and usually extremely old.
Any Camaalis can join any Pillar - it is actually possible to be a member of several Pillars at once, but most Pillars reserve the right to expel or refuse a Camaalis joining for various reasons (their powers and talents aren’t very useful to the Pillar, the Camaalis is considered unsuitable, or the Camaalis has too many other commitments). Being refused or expelled is extremely embarrassing so most Camaalis carefully test the waters first.
Every Pillar has its own internal hierarchy and organisation - they usually have extra resources and talents at their disposal as well. Pillar members on Pillar business are generally given priority over Camaalis resources than independents. In some cases Pillars can even command (or at least STRONGLY request) aid from other Camaalis. All of these things are internal but open to scrutiny by any and all Camaalis - but few actually bother to do so unless there is a suggestion of irregularity.
The Pillars are not only made up of Camaalis family members. Vassal Houses (magical followers of Camaalis), Liegemen (non-magical followers of Camaalis who are at least moderately aware of magic) and Retainers (non-magical followers of Camaalis who think their employers/friends are just quaint eccentrics) can also be members of the Pillars.
