It's time for my annual Eurovision update
May. 25th, 2008 03:10 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Because I just have to, don't I? Why msut I endure this pain when there are people who may be spared?
Actually one main point this year was that the silly was surprisingly in absence, most very unfair. And then a few managed to pull us back and make it as ridiculous as it always was,
And speaking of ridiculous, the political has gotten beyond a joke now, really it has. Even Wogan seemed pissed about it. With the Balkans voting as one bloc and the Scandinavians voting as one bloc and all the new quasi-european entrans (Azerbaijian, Georgia) all voting firmly for each other (and Russia) it becomes even more of a farce than it ever was.
And speaking of farce - the show was just AWFUL. The serbian presenters made me want to reach for the haddock, the between stage entertainment was not only dire but cringeworthy. I actually came close to turning it off before the voting because I couldn't stand another minute of it. It was bad. It was tacky, it was cheesy, it was just dire. The only highlight was the winner of the last contest belting out her song with her incredible voice.
Still, time for the meat of the issue. The songs:
Albania: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xpfTK39aago
Meh. Classic unimaginative Eurovision Ballad. Bonus points for not being sung in English, but it's rather a lot of bland. She has a good voice, but not one so special to shine. She wasn't bad, she was quite good - but fairly dull.
Armenia: http://youtube.com/watch?v=_z4v43HTZgg
I liked it. I liked it a lot. She has a damn impressive voice, a good song and puts together a pretty impressive show without being ridiculous or over the top. Good backing dancers too :). Minus points in my book for singing mostly in english (I much prefer Eurovision in native language) this was definitely one of the better songs.
Azerbaijan: http://youtube.com/watch?v=d8wjcMus_m4&feature=related
Azerbajian is in Europe now? When did that happen? Who moved the borders? Actually, moving international borders is the LEAST of the craziness with this song. In some ways it's classic Eurovision - incredibly over the top shows, impossible, silly costumes and even silly while clearly attempting not to be. If anything the show on the night was MORE extravagant than this clip, including the very briefly thonged girls. What let it down? The "singers" ye GODS they could not sing. It was PAINFUL, really the high pitched screaming angel at the beginning was probably a warning to people to run out of earshot. Actually to be fair to them, clips I've seen on Youtube of them with music videos and in the semis (and the above clip) were MUCH better than their performance on the night - which was DIRE. So maybe they just had a bad night. The rest of Europe seemed to like it. Me? Nice idea, get some decent voices to perform it next time
Bosnia & Herzegovina (Added points for making people around the world try to pronounce "Herzegovina" :)) http://youtube.com/watch?v=0r567UNGEfQ
Yes, these are filling in the spot Ukraine filled last year with sheer craziness. The difference is, well, Ukraine was fun and zany and had THEMED craziness that workd. This... just seems like they're trying too hard wioth the odd knitting brides, the odd woman and her washing line and the weird costumes. It's just random. Freakiness for the sake of being freakiness - it tries to hard, you can tell by the expressions on their faces that they're trying SO hard to be oddballs. I can't deny it was a good laugh though, not as bad/good as Ukraine last year though :)
Croatia: http://youtube.com/watch?v=iK6O0V4ErjA
Ok, i don't get it. The song I get. The guy even has a decent voice if you like that kind of thing (I don't). And bonus points for own language. The floor show? I didn't get. The dancing woman, sure. But the old man randomly shouting off? No, I did not get it. Maybe if I spoke croatian I would, but really, he seemed awfully unnecessary and distracting - and then at the end they all just completely lose it. *is bemused*
Denmark: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6MewUjExmno
Heee, I liked this, despite myself. It was interesting, it was different, even the outfit was odd but fun (actually his outfit made me think "stripper" for some reason. Wishful thinking, maybe). It was a great feel good song, something to grin to (oh, andf the guy's cute). It has my standard dislike that it had absolutely no flavour of Denmark about it at ALL. But it was fun and I liked it. In some ways it was standard - he wasn't especially over talented and the song wasn't taxing but it was different enough not to fade into the background as "random Eurovision song" like Albania's did.
Finland: http://youtube.com/watch?v=YkKcGf0y8lA
Ok, goth rock's never going to win at Eurovision but it deserved to. Or at least to be up there among the top ones. These guys were seriously good, seriously talented and put on a serious show (and it was hot) Sang in their own language and music which (I understand) is actually moderately popular in Finland. Definitely one I'd listen and keep in my mp3 player no matter where I'd heard it. It's a keeper, oh yes yes it is.
France http://youtube.com/watch?v=N0oUuzTPdQU (can't actually find him at Eurovision)
Ok, France wasn't even trying and managed to be even more unusual than the ocean of pink last year. But the record continues - English is creeping into their performance, something the French would normally consider blasphemy. The whole feel of this was the feel I generally get from the British entry - here is someone not taking the contest seriously at all and is just there to do something random and fun. The difference between france and Bosnia is that Bosnia tried SO hard to be zany and France just seemed to dump a genuine eccentric on the stage and let him get on with it - including with his backing singers with their huge facial hair. The song itself? Well, it was a whole lot of nothing to be honest. if it weren't for the eccentricities of the performance it would have been entirely forgettable 60s throwback
Georgia http://youtube.com/watch?v=_2z7RD1Xe6M (can't find Eurovision version)
Well THIS is depressing, but not too bad for all that. Still in the feel good happy atmosphere of Eurovision it was a bit of a lead balloon - not really the place for a sad, deep meaningful song. I like it I think it's one I will have to listen to several times to truly appreciate it - the context of Eurovision just wasn't the place for it. You can't have thios entry and Bosnia's next to each other, it doesn't work. This song has amazing potential and is great on its own merit - it doesn't need the gimicks of Eurovision
Germany http://youtube.com/watch?v=vPRpkAlLegY (not Eurovision)
A giel band wityh a twist. Twist one, woman with with exploding ginger hair appears to be the other women's mother. Twist 2, the blonde can't sing. All through the song I'm thinking "ow, one of these women is severely off the note." Then the blonde sang her solo. Yup, mystery resolved. Kick her and do it as a threesome, it'll be 100 times better. Apart from that as a girlband blah it's quite passable. Really i couldn't pay much attention because the blonde was that bad
Greece http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZSF12QndMrg
She was good. She was damn good. But i don't think she was as good as everyone seemed to do mad about. Certainly I prefered Armenia's to this, if we're going by the balads. She was good but hardly special - I am somewhat bemused by the fuss she earned for this song - let alone the votes
Iceland: http://youtube.com/watch?v=9yb5q1nMT2g
Heee another of my favourites in the competition. Definitely a keeper, fun, dancy, cheesy witrh nice eye candy singing more than decently - actual talent and cheese? Always will get me every time. Should have done a lot better than it eas
Israel http://youtube.com/watch?v=2WhP-59xG8s
I'm shocked this didn't do better. Alright the language didn't lend itself to the song well (singing and phlegm? Never a great combo), but it was very well sung. The guy didn't put on much of a floor show but he didn't have to - he had a genuinely brilliant voice (though that overly soulful "please don't kick me" puppy dog look would definitely bring out my sadistic side and it did take me a few mins while the camera panned in to realise it was a guy singing). He was cute, he could sing. The song was a little blah ballady, but it was definitely better than Greece's effort - but didn't do nearly as well.
Latvia: http://youtube.com/watch?v=X7qPtBl5PSY (ETA: Found a better one!)
Oh gods it should have won! I So wanted it to win. In fact, for the first time ever I actually rung in and voted because I loved this song. Oh sure, it was crap, it eas cheesy and the costuimes were ridiculous but I guarantee you if ANYONE today is singing along to a Eurovision song that has stuck itself in their heads they will be singing "With a HI HI HEE AND A HI HI HOO!" and they'll be grinning while do it. It's an ultimate fun tune and was a definite winner for me - even funner and crazier than Ukraine last year with the added bonus of decent singing and something you can yell along to.
Norway: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7uANE3rULnk
When this started I cringed because she seemed to be wandering all over the tune without actually hitting it. Quite painful really. She settled down though and it improved immensely toooo... Eurovision Blah. Yup, move on Albania, there's someone singing something even more bland than you
Poland: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gvu188dImZo
More Eurovision blah Ballads. Why is it when a country takes it seriously they produce more of the same cookie cutter ballads that are nigh indistinguishable. You wait an hour and play Albania, Norway and Poland's entries back and you tell me if you remember which belonged to wish. Ok, you'd probably get this one because she has a better voice thasn the others but she puhses it juuuuust a LITTLE too hard
Portugal: http://youtube.com/watch?v=MFpfYWmVnIs
Blah ballad. Ok a little harsh as it was a little different in style and content than the others but it did feel a lot like more of the same. Like Poland it gets huge points more for having a genuinely talented singer belting out the blah ballad - but it was still a blah ballad.
Romania http://youtube.com/watch?v=N29xp0KIWco
More blah ballad. Actually I thought this was going to be a song in the Israeli vein and thought that it was disappointing that Israel's rather good talent would be watered down by a song that was the same style but not as good. Then i realised it was a duet.. then realised that HIS talent eclipses her. At least it did on the night, she seems to be better in this version but she's still poor. Gah, seriously nothing makes a weaker singer really look bad than pairing them up with a genuine talent and making them try to catch up. he makes her quite acceptable voice sound AWFUL because he's so much better than her.
Russia: http://youtube.com/watch?v=_XR5xrU02yo
It won. And gods alone know why. Well, except the political voting - really, you could predict the votes before they were read out. It's not like it's bad, but it's more of the same ballad that Israel sang - but he was better. And he didn't have an odd ice skater pirouetting across the stage - what was that about? He was cute, very cute - but there were cuter. He was a good singer - but there were better. It was a decent song - but they were better. I'd like this song but I always have the nagging feeling when I hear it that there was much better on offer.
Serbia http://youtube.com/watch?v=T3_5dkFZZPk
*sigh* Want to see this? Take last year's entry, repeat, remove the talent. Ok, harsh, but it was so much like last year's entry and the singer wasn't even close to as good. It didn't help that they had her sing on the show just highlighting the difference. Basically it's a ballad where now and then the singer revs it into high gear and lets RIP. Now last year that worked because the singer would be cruising around at 4th then move up to fith, sixth and gears you never even heard of but pinned you to your seat. This year? No seat pinning, just a little flat
Spain http://youtube.com/watch?v=uRQhZtbm97I&feature=user
I laughed. From beginning to end. Doubly so when the backing dancer started falling over - and was clearly setting up prat falls. It was a comic sketch, not a song, but it was a damn good one :) Oh it'd never win and it has no musical value, but it's a good laugh :). I don't think Spain or France really tried this year - with the political voting what's the point?
Sweden: http://youtube.com/watch?v=tt6GuBat3h4
Cat fight cat fight cat fight! She's wearing the same outfit as the singer from Ukraine! A bla ballad with a beat, making it a vast improvement. It's nice music and she's not bad - it's a great uplifting oomph of a song - but not quite enough. I don't know if it's the sing or the singer but it's just a little flat
Turkey http://youtube.com/watch?v=riMSxOc7ZyA
Points for originality but this got way more fuss than I felt was warranted. yes rock is unusual, but it wasn't as unusual as Finland's, nor as well done. Sure it was good and among the top acts there but, meh, I think it was placed above acts that were better. Still it's nice to get away from all the damn ballads and the flat pop once in a whil and don't get me wrong it's good, really good. Just not better than those it beat down
Ukraine: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uBvSMmR0TfY
Fighting with Sweden for that dress :). Really this was very similar to Sweden's good beat, good singer, similar style - but Ukraine's took it up a notch, had better backing dancers, better choreography (hells the dance was incredible, flawless and the dancers were seriously good), a better song and was waaaaaay sexier. It managed to blow away any blah from it and was very very not bland. Sweden upped the beat but still felt blah round the edges - Ukraine banished the blah.
UK http://youtube.com/watch?v=rWnQ_81n3YE
Ok, I hated ours. Not because it was dire but because it went against all of our traditions of Eurovision - because it WASN'T ridiculous. What the hell? France and Spain mock the whole thing and we put a serious entry in? Since when do WE of all people pretend to care about winnming Eurovision? The problem was that if this is us taking it seriously it was pretty blah and dire. And it just wasn't bad enough for it NOT to be serious. Please, this is the best we can do? This retro blah crap? Ok, not to be so harsh - for the style of music it was it was very good - but it was hideously dated to my ears and just fell flat against the other acts there.

Turkey. Hummm. Eyebrows. I would.
France: I liked last year's group. They rocked. I missed them. Also the backing singers had better beards than your man who was singing.

Date: 2008-05-25 06:43 pm (UTC)I LOVED LATVIA'S SONG. OMFG PIRATES SQUEEEEEEEEEE!
I've been attempting to write what I feel should be the sequeel to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, and this totally made my day. (I have an unhealthy obsession with pirates, mostly because my great-great-great-great (ad naseum) Grandfather sailed with Calico Jack Rackham(spelling?) at one time, and was hanged for piracy. yay family history no one cares about!)
