Had a visit from my new-ish goddaughter today (WHY my cousin insists on making me a godparent I do not know, but now both of her daughters have me inflicted on them). Molly Mae. (I am currently calling the child Peggy Sue, Bobby Joe, Billy Bob and anything else I can think of to convince her to stop this insanity and change the name, but alas it does not seem to be working. Didn't work with her eldest daughter either, who I still call Morag. In my defence I wish to point out she knew exactly how evil I was before inflicting me on the children)

Anyway, brought along by her grandmother, MM is a little (or not so little) bundle of noise and flailing. I look forward to the day she is old enough for me to feed her enumbers. Yes, yes I do :) Grandmother fussed so much with the baby that i made sure I gave poor Morag a plushie Vampire (she likes vampires. My work here is almost done), but was far from my main concern...

See, the grandmother of these 2 girls has... problems. Mainly she doesn't EAT. She is, frankly, anorexic. She's convinced she's fat (she seriously isn't) and will often skip eating a day or two. Even when she is eating it's minescule amounts. The on;y reason she's not skin and bones is the alcohol she consumes *sigh* Still, she is a good and caring person and a more-than competent grandmother.

Except... she thinks MM is too big. Fat in fact. Yes, she IS big for her age, but that's a good thing. A SEVEN WEEK OLD BABY CANNOT BE OVERWEIGHT! I am passing the word to my cousin to keep an eye out, in no way shape or form shoulod a babe in arms be put on a diet.

That includes some food choices such as vegan or vegetarian diets. It is very difficult for a baby to get the fat necessary for proper brain development, on top of other difficulties. I am told that it CAN be done but takes a lot of time and effort.

What is the name that Morag's mother gave to her? And where did you get a vampire plushie?

I'm not entirely convinced of the wisdom of an all plant diet at the best of time,s but I know it can work if the vegetarian/vegan is careful and sensible. for a growing baby? You need a nutritiionist and know what to do

Morgan *shudder* local shops all have vampire plushies naturally!

A friend of mine has a how-to for making a Bat-mobile ... yes, puns intended, but the result is a cute plush circle of bats to fly around the crib for the baby to look at.

Likes to start 'em young, my gothy friend does.

I hope you'll be the voice of sanity for that poor child as she reaches the age of, oh, five and starts having body-issues per-gramma.

you should mention to her that there was a woman who's kid nearly died of malnutrition because she was giving her skimmed milk instead of full fat.

Oh, you're an awesome godparent. I wish you were mine (even though you're younger than I am by... oh... 5 years? I'm 29).

Tell Nana that she has absolutely no say whatsoever in the baby's diet. Ever. Esepcially since she has a distorted body image. A 7-week old is incapable of being overweight. :P

::sighs:: Some people....

What in the unholy fuck!? NOOOOOO! JUST NO! Babies CANNOT be overweight. Two year olds, yes. But SEVEN WEEK OLD BABIES!? NOT IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT YOU CRAZY OLD COOT!!

Okay, sorry about that. But crap like that pisses me off to absolutely no end. The world is already "fat" obsessed. It doesn't need to be pushed on BABIES who don't know better and are supposed to be chubby little cherubs anyway. Please tell me you beat the woman soundly about the head and shoulders with a blunt object. I know she's your grandmother and all, but crap like that just makes me RAAAAAGE.

Please tell me your cousin has better sense than that. Please!?

I think the only safe way to give a baby a "vegetarian" diet without very close doctor supervision is to just breastfeed her as long as possible, and go veg yourself.

Even then, you'd have to watch your own diet like crazy, because of the additional nutritional demands imposed by nursing.
