LJ speaks! At last
Aug. 8th, 2007 04:24 pmSo, LJ has finally decide to stir from their cave and speak to us.
And it's a whole lot of nothing, really. They've twisted and turned and still avoided doing much but they have added some clarification (which basically contradicts what they said before). Some unpleasantness from it all (beyond the fact it's freaking late):
1) Despite the fact that the standards HAVE CHANGED they're still going to keep people banned who relied on old standards and old comments by the LJ staff. Added bonus for lots of pretending old comments, emails and screencaps didn't exist and desperately trying to ignore what they said before. They''ve also decided that the reason why someone is banned is apparently confidential, because, y'know, that would mean they'd have to explain it.
2) the lj staff have posted in the community Lj-Biz. Not news. It was politely suggested that they crosspost it in News (since it ISW a clarification of the terms of service that they have desperately tried not to change for fear that it would lead to the admission that YES they are moving the goal posts) so that as many people notice it as possible - after all, we're talking about new rules that can get your journal deleted with NO refunds, just a few short weeks after permanent accounts have been made available. Ljstaff member coffiechica adamantly refused basically saying "everyone who wants to know will find out about it"
Well, thanks dear. Hey, you think my credit card company may change their terms and conditions and hoppe that word of mouth will let me know? No? Ah, then this must be that unprofessional thing raising its head again.
3) Despite Burr86's less than amusing and most certainly unprofessional comment mocking everyone who was complaining, LJstaff have decided to make a general statement that no-one's perfect and he exercised bad judgement. No consequences, no apology. Hey, the respect keeps on coming, doesn't it? Are we feeling valued yet?
4) There was a brief kerfuffle in that LJ ISN'T enforcing its own ToS against communities that promote self-harm and hate speech and these are EXPRESSLY mentioned in the ToS. First there was a weasley attempt to claim they needed to be reported, which was kind of dashed by a screencap of someone who HAD reported (when will they leanr how hard it is to lie about these things?) then we went to true bizarre land when coffiechica (expressly acting as an Lj employee, because she was asked by one stunned commenter and replied) saying that pro-anorexia communities are SUPPORT GROUPS Yes. there was much kerfuffle over that one and the remeaining shreds of lj credibility fell into light and fluffy ashes on the floor.
Needless to say that pro-anorexia groups, and hate crime groups (hey, and actual pictures of women who look awfully on the young side) remain on LJ. But your evil m/m potentially underaged fictional pictures are not.
5) It is still beyond dodgy that we had strikethrough, they apologised, made nice, said it would all be ok (INCLUDING SAYING THAT HP SLASH FANFICTION AND FANART WOULD BE OK) then sold the permanent journals... then started banning again. Yeah, that's just beyond scummy. I'd urge everyone to make sure not a penny more of theirs falls into LJ's pockets
