Leaving aside the flood for a while I cam across this little meme: http://mingle2.com/blog-rating

It scans my journal to see how it should be rated like a film - what a fun bit of fluff.

Mine came back NC-17 (American rating system I assume?) - well, I thought, no surprises there. Must be all the explicit sex scenes, y'know?

Of course then I looked at it. The meme is not that sophisticated. My blog is rated NC-17 at least in part because it contains the words "gay" and "gays." "Sexy" and "hell" were also objectionable.

The existance of the word "gay" points towards adult only content? Excuse me, I have to find the larger of my clue-sticks and go on a thwapping spree

Mine is rated PG.

I realize this is partly because my smut is all hidden behind a filter, but I still find that hilarious. In the meantime, I will loan you a spare clue-stick; I haven't needed it lately.

I got PG-13 for mentioning, apparently, the word "bomb".

Seriously?

I have explicit sex scenes. I am rated R for the words "bitch" and "punch".

...

Can I join you? I don't have a clue stick, but I can borrow Emmylove's Clue Bat.

Everything that I've heard about this meme is that it's incredibly simplistic and naïve. I believe that it even considers commenter's names, so that even if everything else is squeaky clean you could still get a naughty rating if one of your commenters has a risqué name. Doesn't seem to have affected the popularity of this one, though, since I've seen it on just about every blog I read.

Ridiculous isn't it? It must just have a hate list of naughty bad words.

Which is as simple as you expect from a mem - but I resent that "gay" is one of them or considered inherently adult

My commenters have to be squeaky clean? Ye gods with my friends list I'm amazed it doesn't come back "E" for Exorcism

Aha! We have discovered the meaning of 'silver alert'! It means "gay people about, beware!"

Seriously, the people with this kind of mentality are just tools. The kind of cheap Chinese made tools that snap off in your hand if you do any serious work with them.

This just makes me want to post the lyrics to the "Flintstones" children's cartoon, which end with "We'll have a gay old time!"

The Flintstones, NC-17. Who knew?
