His Most Excellent Majesty King Sparky the Eternally Amused read a report on the stereotyping of minorities in the media and smiled, since he had been considering the same issues himself. There had certainly been some programmes on television that had put some serious dents in the Eternal Amusement. He didn’t like it but was disinclined to embrace any kind of curtailment on freedom of speech.

After much wrangling he settled on a proposal of prizes for well portrayed minority roles - you could always rely on greed, after all.

Next on the proposal list was several concerned citizens (he was reaching for the haddock already) complaining about beauty pageants. While he could see the point about the objectification of women his Majesty was firmly of the opinion that beauty pageants were pretty low down the list of perpetrators. Besides, he was unwilling to tell women they weren't allowed to display themselves in this manner. Smiling, he found a solution and opened up the contests to men as well as women. Women could then look at scantily clad good looking men and were free to objectify as much as they wanted - then everyone could be objectified in an equal manner.

And as to the moralist who proposed “modest dress” laws for women - His Majesty would have him flogged, but he rather thought the moralist would enjoy that

At one point in time, I disliked beauty pagents for the objectification of women. As I grew older, and found that this same objectification can be a powerful tool, I changed my mind. Why should I complain if being female gets me free drinks or a warning instead of a speeding ticket? If guys are going to be foolish enough to give me a bit of lee-way because I have breasts, so much the better...

IOn soem ways it can be seen as exploitation of men

With me it comes down to a simple choice issue - sure, we may think that women (or men for that matter) using their looks to get ahead tends to emphasise the ideas that looks are all that is important with them - but shouldn't it be THEIR choice whether they display their bodies or not?
