Another WoW rant
Apr. 5th, 2007 01:48 amOk, Blizzard, I think this is your fault.
You know the classes? Well there are 3 basic kinds: Tank (takes the hits and keeps going) Healer (keeps people upright) DPS {Damage Per Second) whose job it is to lay out TONS of damage as quickly as possible. (there are also freaky hybrids and oddjobs but that's another matter).
Now, Blizzard may have missed this while designing The Burning Crusade, but there are actually CLOSE COMBAT DPS. No, seriously, there are. We have Feral Druids and Fury Warriors and Retribution Paladins and Combat Shamans and remember the bloody ROGUES?!
But it seems that 90%+ of all outland instance bosses just CRUSH close combat DPS in seconds. Our guild is rogue heavy, we're not best pleased at this.
Seriously, just do a quick review and think of ALL the bosses that have AoE novas/whirlwind attack (Shadow Labs, Arcatraz, Shattered Halls, Sethek Halls) or where you can't stand too close to each other (ever tried to kill the last boss in Shattered Halls with Close Combat DPS? yeah, that's fun) or they have adds that need taking down quickly then skipping back to the boss then back to the adds (Mana Tombs, Mechanar, Shattered Halls etc) or maybe the boss looses agro from the tank and runs around - all DPS chasing him on foot (Shattered Halls, Shadow Labs, Mechanar)
Time after time we're desperately insisting on 1 Close combat DPS maximum - and even they are considered a liability next to the shadow priests, mages, hunter. As one rogue bitched - why don't we just replace the rogues with skeleton keys?
And while I'm at it, the Rogues themselves haven't made it any easier. Yes, with the new talents and equipment and skills rogues are PVP monsters (which pisses off my mage no end). They can stun you nearly indefinitely. With fiendish glee all of the sensible sword rogues in our guild respecced to become dagger rogues - woohoo, they can stun forever and completely rule in Arena! Yay.
Trouble is, oh roguey dears, is that BOSSES DO NOT BLOODY STUN! None of them. EVER. And because you've respecced to daggers and lots of stun, your DPS has DROPPED. Look at the freaking damage meters (I hate these things) the bloody TANK almost as much damage
So, no, we DON'T want you on instances. We take you ONE AT A TIME, because you're our friends and we like you and don't want to exclude you but between Blizzard including so many mobs that beast close combat DPS and your INSISTENCE on nerfing your PVE abilities mean we are carrying you.
Gah, I'm just tired of my poor feral tank wiping time and again against bosses because (and the wail goes up in guild chat every time) "WE AREN'T DOPING ENOUGH DAMAGE!"

You are correct sir
Date: 2007-04-05 03:18 pm (UTC)For a while our hate was spread between Feral Druids and Felhunters (and Pallys to a lesser degree), but with the Felhunters being nerfed, we can now vent our full rage on Feral Druids.
Some warriors still hate Pallys, but I actually feel bad for the ones who were basically told "Nope! You're a healer in plate. Suck it up!"
Re: You are correct sir
Date: 2007-04-05 04:08 pm (UTC)Pally as a main tank? I'm told it can be done. I remain dubious. Highly dubious. Hey they can be Healadins or a decent dps (and they're our favourite hybrid class to fill the 5th spot, especially when a druid is healing)
Actually, I've found warriors who love that we can tank - because they can finally be fury dps without everyone bitching at them

Date: 2007-04-05 04:41 pm (UTC)Once I'm up in there with my Earth Shield (because I'll be going resto as soon as I hit 70), he'll be even MORE unstoppable.
The warriors in our guild are all too happy to DPS it up and off-tank when necessary, and are giving the Rogues a run for their money...
But then, we pride ourselves on ignoring traditional class role.

Date: 2007-04-05 06:34 pm (UTC)A fury warrior can do a lot more damage than a rogue (at least than our rogues)
Re: You are correct sir
Date: 2007-04-05 06:45 pm (UTC)Mix a shadow priest with a prot-specced Paladin sometime; they're hard to beat. Throw in a Shaman laying down Mana Spring and Earth Shield, and two more DPS classes (any will do), and you have the best five-man groups around.
One of our Paladins has a nice long section on Paladin tanking on our guild website, but it might be in one of the members-only areas. I'll check when I'm not at work to see if I can get it and repost it here, or you can poke around at http://www.blood-forged.com yourself if you like. =)
Paladin Tanking
Date: 2007-04-05 09:58 pm (UTC)Re: You are correct sir
Date: 2007-04-07 01:34 pm (UTC)But I have looked at the talent tree and palas seem to be near invulvnerable as prots, but I don't know how they generate agro
I worry about the mana thing, we like using healadins a lot (because they aren't as fragile as priests) but we avoid it in big instances because we KNOW they have a limited mana bar (except for one paladin who dresses entirely in cloth for his healing gear and, imo, might as well be a priest)
Re: You are correct sir
Date: 2007-04-07 02:48 pm (UTC)As for the mana thing, the big problems Paladins had in the past is that they ran out of mana quickly, and their aggro generation hit the floor - no mana = no holy damage, after all. That changed with 2.0, where Paladins got Spiritual Attunement. 10% of the healing done to them gets turned into mana, and this is why they're such a SICK combination with Shadow Priests.
I'll post the Paladin tanking post to my own journal so it'll be visible.

Date: 2007-04-05 02:42 pm (UTC)As for Rogue specs, if your PVP-specced Rogue insists on coming to the raid make him respec. It's not like 50-100g/week to switch back and forth is a large amount of money anymore, and if your hybrid classes can carry 2-3 sets of gear apiece AT ALL TIMES, it's certainly reasonable to expect your Rogues to carry a PvP set and a PvE set, and leave the former in the bank when it's raid time.
Rialla: 61 Subtlety-specced raiding Rogue (retired), topping the DPS charts since 2.0
Kothos: 67 Elemental-specced Shaman, still grinding the grind.

Date: 2007-04-05 04:26 pm (UTC)I can convince them to get extra kit (after all, my feral has dps kit, tank kit and 3 resistance kits building!) so they can'ty bitch but respecc? I doubt that will happen. But it IS annoying
