Now I suanter into my office on Monday with an air of expectanat curiosity. See, over the weekend we got new furniture. I like our old furniture, it was BIG and DARK and REAL WOOD and had GRAVITAS....

Buit it had also seen many many many years of extensive use and there comes a time when furniture crosses from looking old and traditional to looking merely ragged and tatty. And hey, even a lawyer's office needs a change some time. There was talk of modernisation but I trusted them to be sensible and looked forward to the new shinies.

I was being very very silly, wasn't I?

For I walke dinot my office and saw.... Chrome. Chrome and glass and plastic everywhere. And there are no straight edges, it's all weird and unnatural curves. It looks like modern art by an artist obsessed with lava lamps. All the wood is MDF trying to be ultra-pale pine.

It looks like a "worst of Ikea" show room. It has as much gravitas as a Children's TV presenter. It has as much class and style as Elton John. It has all the dignity of Big Brother. It is beyond vile.

Sparky is not pleased.

Would you be allowed to put up a poster of the Wicked Witch of the West screaming "I'm melting!", would you?

There is always the option of going for heavy impact. the entire office is done in faux-modern decoration, so you do your office up as traditionally as possible. that way as soon as a client enters your office and sees you staring over your desk at them they flee in terror :D

They're going to get our old stuff lovingly repaired and returned I think - they ahve promised to resolve this

I...I like chrome and glass furniture.

But I agree that in an office of Serious Business, it does not lend a great deal of gravtias to the situation.

I kind of liked one set I saw but then did some detailed checking and it was metal I could bend with my hands. This was expensive stuff and it was like disposable cookware.

Personally I hate it but can understand that some people like it - it's just so grossly inappropriate for the office

and it's a bitch to clean

The latter I do not disagree with in the slightest. I remember the Saturday ritual windexing of the glass-topped coffee table in my family's house.

It sounds like you would appreciate the decor of my place of work: http://www.utexas.edu/tours/mainbuilding/interior/library/

We get a lot of kids who come here to study because "we look like what a library should look like."
One of my co-workers has also suggested that we hang the Hogwarts banners on either side of the Great Crests leading into the Reading Room and Herbarium, on the theory that they'd blend right in and no one would notice.

I just thank god I don't work in the baby-puke yellow monstrosity that is the 1977-era main library here.

Now now, don't resist the attempt to drag you all kicking and screaming into the Century of the Fruitbat, you'll just hurt yourself.

It sounds...very easy to clean :)

I suspect you know quite a few people who could have done that right. I suspect you could have as your writing reflects that certain skill.

Isn't there a domestic furniure maker in Britain that's been around longer than the Queen and whose furniture says "We have money and power and it's yours for a price"?

:)

I'm looking at about 4k in furniture now. They are not budging on the price as it's their selling time.

We have many bespoke furniture mercvhants who would be willing to help.

Actually, we have more reasonable ones who are rescuing us from the insanity and restoring our OLD furniture. This crap? Goes back to the Sweedish flatpackers where it came from

The glass and the chrome and the curves *maybe8 but fake wood? That's just nasty.

OTOH - it'll look like crap within six months and they'll have to replace it all. Right? (please?)

They would - because it's crap.

But office protests (and a partner finally paying attention) have conspired together to get our old stuff restored - after it is repaired and reupholstered

Oh God... chrome and plastic and glass huuuuuurts.

I'm a traditionalist myself... why on Cenarius' green Azeroth couldn't they just have re-upholstered and refinished the wood on the old furniture? /cries on behalf of Spark

Hurts? The AGONY of it will kill me.

On the plus side this is what they are now moiving to do - we can return the old stuff apparently (some clause we had put in - if not completely satisfied etc etc. Projectil vomiting lawyers count as not completely satisfied)
