Sometimes the mood just fails in RP doesn't it?

You've set up the scene. You have an evocative location, emotionally charged situations, powerful, real chaarcters and ONE thing screws it up.

Like this:

He was a tall, hard Malkavian with eyes like blue ice and a stern glare that could put the fear in the vilest Tzimisce, whose fighting prowess and brutal callous ruthlessness made the Lasombra quail. Rumours of his deeds had reached you and gave even you nightmares. His insane imaginations thought up torturesd that no rational mind could hold. His servants were driven mad just witnessing them and even the Sabbat could not endure such torment. He rose to his feet, towering over you even as you reflexively shrunk back, he steps down off the dais and…

At this point we had a hiccough. See I was using a loop of quiet orchestral music as a backing for this scene, switching to a fanfare for the prince – hey music sets the mood. Unfortunately randomness had taken the player. The music that Leif the Sheriff stepped down to waaas… Morris Dancing music. Yes, that’s right, Morris dancing. I battled valiantly on but they players were nearly dead from laughter now at my vicious, terrifying sheriff wearing bells and waving a hanky around. And from that day forth they repeatedly referred to poor Leif as Morris. *sigh* it’s the Lady of Perpetual Motion all over again.

LOL, My mage once summoned a spirit of life into our circle in our own sanctum and I botched it so badly I reversed gravity in the house and permenantly haunted the upstairs bathroom. The other inhabitants were not amused.

Music in Tabletop

I have had VERY mixed success in trying to do background music. Ultimately my most successfull attempts were rather than trying to fit specific events to the music, I would simply run some background music (generally without lyrics) that were evocative of the mood I wanted IN GENERAL.

For example I would generally play "Twin Peaks" During my Changeling games.

Sure, mood music can really add to a session. A nice background track of not-quite-intelligible chanting, say. Lighting, too. You know, dim the lights or pull out a few candles. And of course, it can be good to have some evocative props, to really set the scene. And you can /really/ engage the senses if you get smell involved.

But if you do all that, don't forget to go that last step and close the blinds. Because MAN, explaining the chanting and the knife and the candles and the smell of blood to a Southern sheriff on a Friday night can really ruin your weekend. Just sayin'.

Ahh they wanted to dim the lights but I saig "hey, you're in Elysium, there are crystal chandeliers and Toreador who want you to see their new dress - it's not dark!

heee, I do my rituals in the park and we have LARPED in the coffeeshop. I resign myself to be considered weird and keep going :)

It worked in our LARP but I think micromanaging the music just doesn't work

Yeah, I think that covers Morris dancing.
