And now a rant about...
Aug. 2nd, 2006 02:43 pm…World of Warcraft.
Not the game of course, that rocks muchly (even if Shamans are broken and wrong) but the people in the game – why rant about things when people are so terribly bad.
Now, I am a lv 60 mage with 300 enchanting. Since some on the server have trouble with definitions and meanings of these words and the roles of the class, level and profession I feel the need to provide a guide for them.
As a mage that means I am:
A DPS class (a character that causes vast amounts of damage very quickly)
Very good at AoE and crowd control (I can splat many things at once)
A cloth class (I choose my armour for style – alright, and intelligence buffs - rather than protective value and subsequently bruise in a stiff breeze)
What I am not:
A vending machine. Yes I can conjure food and water from nothing. Yes it is an ability that rocks muchly. No, it doesn’t cost me anything and NO I am NOT going to sit around all day in Ironforge conjuring water for your cheap self
Public Transport. Yes I can teleport myself to any alliance capital. Yes I can even portal others to them. That doesn’t mean I want to spend an age in Darnassus ferrying people across the ocean. Also, I’m not subsidising you – those portal runes cost money, why should I pay for your trip?
As a Level 60 I am:
Mighty beyond reason (having reached maximum level)
Rich beyond reason. (because making money is all I do now)
Well equipped beyond reason :p (because hunting items is all I do now)
An expert in my field (because my professions are maxed out, come, buy from me!)
What I am not:
A baby sitter. You want to go down Deadmines (dungeon for lv16-20)? Go invite 4 other young adventurers. Don’t ask me to come – there is nothing down there I’m interested in. I can solo the place in my sleep. Do your own damn dungeon. This will also REALLY piss me off if you haven’t even TRIED to use the NOW GLOBAL “looking for group” channel to find someone your own level..
Escort: If your lv 5 elf wants to trek from Darnassus to Stormwind, that’s his problem. Tell me again why I am supposed to care that every enemy along the way will squish you?
Bodyguard: If you are fool enough to attack a member of the Horde (opposing faction) on this non-pvp server, do NOT expect me to run in and save you when your intended victim starts squishing you. You picked the fight, you suffer the death when you screw up. This is especially true when you attack a Horde 15 levels higher than you then run to me and expect me to do more than laugh at you.
Bank: Yes I have lots of money. No, I am not going to give any of it to you. Not even 1 copper piece. I don’t care WHY you need it – mount, training, whatever – not my problem. Earn your money like everyone else. And all the lv 10s asking for 20g? Heh, most people that level are happy if they have 1 gold piece. You will be slapped for greedy noobishness.
Enchanter
Enchanting is a nice skill. I get crappy magic items or items I cannot use, destroy them for components then get to add nice new abilities to other items. It’s very nifty and the best way to improve your lovely equipment. People flock to me with vast sums of money to pay me to improve their armour and weapons.
And some people flock to me with no money and expect the same. These will be duly slapped.
See my above lv 60 comment – I am not going to give you a free enchant to improve my skill. It’s already maxed out. I’m in it for the profit only. Yes, even if you bring me all the components I am still not doing it for free. Why? Because it’s a business transaction. I expect to make a profit. Don’t whine, you’ve been spending your whole career using your blacksmithing to sell weapons on the Auction House. This is how Enchanters make money.
Yes, 100g is a lot of money. That’s because the components used in the enchant are VERY expensive. I am not going to sell you it for less than it costs me in items. Why? Because I’m a mage, not Stormwind’s Charity shop.
(On behalf of a friend) Yes, 300g is a ludicrous amount of money. That’s because it is the Crusader enchant, one of the most powerful enchants in the game. The formula is very rare. There are only about a dozen people on the whole server who can do it. It’s a sellers market.
If you gasp “I can’t afford that!” I will offer you a cheaper alternative. I won’t lower my price. I repeat, the only reason I am selling this enchant is for the cash. You don’t have the cash, I don’t provide the service. No skin off my nose.
Am I unreasonably cruel? I don’t think so. None of these apply to guild mates – who get escorts, babysitting, cost price enchants and all kinds of goodness from me (within reason. I have escorted the same damn guy down Deadmines 4 times now – that’s ENOUGH) but I don’t see why I’m expected to offer strangers the same service. No level 60 carried me when I was lv 20, I don’t feel the need to carry others.

What server? I'm pretty much devoted to Medivh here.
Re: But... but... A Mage?
Date: 2006-08-03 09:37 am (UTC)Moonglade owns my soul at the minute
Thats true!
Date: 2006-08-03 01:20 pm (UTC)One day MMOs will see the value in free server transfers, virtually at will.
Shadowbane was going to do that, but so far no one else has.
Re: Thats true!
Date: 2006-08-04 11:35 am (UTC)Which was cool - but the spell is exactly the same as normal sheep (except maybe that pigs don't wander around as much) and they can't even be used at the same time *sulk*. The only bonus is in instances with multiple mages (UBRS in particular) when you can see who has sheeped what
now that would be interesting :)
Re: But... but... A Mage?
Date: 2006-08-03 11:03 pm (UTC)And I tell you - as a priest I bruise as easy as you, especially when people don't control the aggro and then wonder why I've just died having been mobbed by ten basilisks at the same time. You'd think after five wipes they'd have learnt that one ...
Re: But... but... A Mage?
Date: 2006-08-04 11:36 am (UTC)Gah, I ahte people who don't control the agro. i take it as my duty to stand NEAR the priest so if either of us are mobbed I can frost nova and buy us cloth wearers some time for the fighters to get his arse back there and save us

Date: 2006-08-02 02:58 pm (UTC)1. Group invitations
2. Guild invitations (riight... I really want to go down to wiping in MC.. good luck with that)
3. People begging to join my guild (Just no.)
The ones that are most amusing are some variation on Dritz, or drytzz, ir however the bloody hell they butcher it, and don't recognize where our guildname came from (House Harpell)

Date: 2006-08-02 03:32 pm (UTC)One guy threw out an advert on trade: "Need LW for Volcanic Breastplate, have mats." I threw him a quick message saying I'd do the work for a gold, which is cheap - but I don't feel good charging more for about 30 seconds of my time.
Turns out his idea of 'have mats' was "I have some (not even enough) leather, and I bought the thread. You have those essences, right?"
And then he got pissed off when I told him that 1) I didn't, and that 2) If he wanted me to buy them he'd be footing the bill.
There's all kinds of stupid twits all over WoW. Fortunately, I have most of them on ignore by now. Infinite Ignore is my friend.

Date: 2006-08-03 09:42 am (UTC)Gah, why shouldn't you be paid for services? And to expect people to provide mats for free as well? That's ludicrous.

Date: 2006-08-03 01:31 pm (UTC)But Elemental Essences regularly sell (on my server, at least) for 10-15 gold, sometimes as high as 20. Expecting me to provide *that* for free is just stupid.

Date: 2006-08-03 02:28 pm (UTC)(So it goes: "Elemental Earth" "Core of Earth" "Essence of Earth"
or: "Elemental Air" "Breath of Wind" "Essence of Air"?)
Yeah, you're looking at a minimum of 15g for the later ones on my server. I know because I lectured a hunter who wanted Enchant 2H Weapon: Agility which requires 8 Essences of Air when he bitched about the cost.

Date: 2006-08-11 07:31 pm (UTC)Yeah, 2H: Agility is expensive. Someone obviously just needed to get over himself. :-p

Date: 2006-08-18 02:13 pm (UTC)I have auctioneer, so i can just rattle off the prices to them). It also helps that I have lots of gold now. If they won't pay I just shrug and leave (with them whining behind me). i don't NEED the money. I'm not going to haggle. this is the price. Take it or leave it
