Now I am signed up on the mailing list for my MP to send out insipid messages to me from time to time about how wonderful he is. Usually they send me to sleep because our MP prefers local issues to national issues and seems to centre all his attention of things even the local council doesn’t care about like flower beds, city beautification and street lights. His activity reports consist of him bitching to people who have no power to fix the problems, it seems (them all being local council issues).

But now he has finally DONE something! HURRAH!

He has managed to get central government to give many millions for the building of a by-pass. “At last,” thought I, “P will finally get a by-pass!” (This village is small but has a huge amount of lorry traffic raging through it. It’s an old village so the houses are terraced and don’t have garages so cars have to park on the side of this very narrow road. To make matters worse the church is slap bang in the middle of where the road SHOULD be so it twists and turns round some very impressive blind corners - where you have to go round on the wrong side of the road with speeding lorries coming the other way negotiating round a slalom of parked cars. A nightmare? Heh, people don‘t dream things this bad).

No, my hopes were dashed. For B is getting a by-pass instead. Now this would seem strange to any outside observer - B has pretty limited traffic - Ok there’s the rush hour but it’s a sizeable town and can easily take it. There’s little in the way of heavy goods traffic (such traffic there is actually goes TO B) and precious few people actually pass THROUGH the town - you either go there to expressly REACH B or don’t go at all.

So why a by-pass? Well, B is where all the rich people live - if you have money and pretensions this is the place to live. This is where the MP lives.

Suddenly everything becomes clear.

I would despair of government, but this is pretty damn minor compared to most of the stuff they hand down.

Isn't this usually referred to as feathering one's own nest?
