Unfortunate news round up
Dec. 20th, 2009 12:11 amQuickly catching up on all the entires I've marked "must read but is too damn depressing at the moment". Mental note: this just makes for one big chunk of depression - be more organised in future.
So the various homophobic fails of the world.
We start with the Media
The media is mightily important. The media, and it's depictions of GBLT people, shape the perceptions of us greater than any other force out there. It is the mouthpiece, the broadcast, the announcer of our worth and value. And when it devalues us, people listen
I have already spoken about the BBC's truly epicly offensive fail in considering anti-gay genocide reasonable we also have:
We have Robert Downey JR refers to gay people as “homos” and “screamers” on the Lettermen show But don’t worry ‘butch’ homosexuals exist, he assures us. Yeah, I don't even have to dissect that, it speaks for itself
The homophobic double standard continues concering Adam Lambert. He was penalised for his sexy display and depictions of his kiss (KISS! Not even the face in the crotch! The bloody KISS!) was censored when reported. But the same network is happy to show Lady Gaga kiss a female dancer. Of course, Lesbian kisses turn on the hetero men so they’re ok. *eye roll*
The Next biggie is politics. A no-brainer - with homophobic politicians fighting tooth and nail to oppress us as viciously as possible, our lives become impossibly hard. It doesn't have to be as grossly over as the vileness in Uganda (and Iran and Saudi Arabia and Nigeria and... yeah this needs to be another post to hurt us
Rachael Maddow (all respect due) skewers Rick Warren’s lies on proposition 8, Uganda et al with true style
White house decides to ignore judge’s order to provide health benefits to the partner of a lesbian employee Lambda legal a little scathing that the DOJ would think it has more authority to interpret federal law than a federal judge. Funny that.
Your traditional homophobic screed In response to Anise Parker becoming mayor of Houston. Apparently god’s wrath will follow. It’s been a while since we heard god’s wrath being invoked, I thought it had gone out of fashion
South Carolina Senator, Jim DeMint is terrified of a gay president. He also thinks gays are destructive to society. With such people in government, homosexuals have very good reason to fear
Online newspapers receive so many hateful comments about gay Canadian MP Scott Brison’s christmas card that they actually have to shut down the comment sections. C’mon! The card shows him and his husband walking their dog. It’s hardly lascivious! They’re not even stood near each other and they’re both very warmly dressed. They’re not even wielding an attack beaver in a menacing fashion!
Trans teen in Florida is denied job because she is trans. prospective employer is so blazenly hateful he calls her, leaves a message saying that he will never hire “faggots.” This is why protection from employment discrimination is so important
Rep. Matlock from Tennessee (I’d do those little letter contractions but I can never remember them) has truly bizarre anti-Semitic and anti-trans rant about Christmas It’s like they’re not even TRYING to make sense any more
Bob Emrich, deeply unpleasant homophobic supporter of bigotry in Maine defends Uganda’s kill gays bill
And the politicians' ever favourite cheer leaders in hate, religion eternally dedicated to make our lives as much a hell as is possible.
In Kalamazoo 3 churches withdraw from a charity that has provided food for the homeless because of the anti-discrimination law that came into force. Their hatred of gay people outweighs their charitable impulses it seems. Though their charitable impulses seem to be more of a recruitment drive than anything else.
I don’t understand this. I didn’t understand it when the Catholic church threatened to do the same in DC. Hatred this strong is just beyond disgusting and puts the lie to everything they say their church stands for.
Ken Hutcherson Compares the effects of Hate Crime laws on Christians to Jim Crow Laws against black people Yes, Christians are as opposed as black people were during segregation. I have not the words.
The Salvation Army is active this time of year, looking for donations in the season of peace, love and goodwill to all men. Unless they’re gay. Well if I’m not good enough for your Salvation Army, nor is my money there are much better charities who feel they can give without the hate.
A religious advocacy group in Utah wants to expand religious exemptions from the non-discrimination law to ALL religious people, not just churches and religious groups So, if you’re an employer and believe in a hate deity, you should be able to sack gay people - or treat them like shit, whatever your hate deity demands. Because that would REALLY make the law pointful
Never pleasant reading - but it's important to watch and be aware. Because this stuff is happening and will keep happening - and it's this stuff that encourages the hate and the venom and the violence
