Daily Telegraph, you big ol' meanies!
May. 22nd, 2009 01:08 pmNow, far be it from me for defending the Torygraph - a paper I wouldn't even use to line bird cages because it is so grossly objectionable that bird shit falling on it would actually improve its content, but I feel compelled to comment (BTW anyone got a soapbox I can borrow? This one's getting a bit worn)

It seems that Tory backbencher Nadine Dorries is desperately clutching her pearls and having the screaming meemies about the STRAIN those AWFUL people at the Telegraph have put on MPs by disclosing their expenses.
It seems those awful awful journalists are conducting a WITCH-HUNT! And some MPs are so stressed by the relevations that she fears they may *gasp* do themselves harm!!!! Because, y'know, journalist are so mean for revealing to the pulic people who are RIPPING US OFF
And don't we all know that the expenses for MPs was ALWAYS understood to be there to be exploited (sorry, MAXIMISED) in lieu of PROPER pay rises (which, I find rather unusual because it has been a perennial scandal that while every other person in the country is expected to tighten their belts and the various public sector unions rage at the cuts they're expected to swallow while EVERY YEAR the MPs have managed an above inflation pay rise).
As Peter Luff (who spent £26,800 decorating his flat and house - switching them back and forth for his allowances) says, the allowances barely cover their costs and if we want diverse MPs rather than just the rich we need to give them the allowances. After all, if you're not already obscenely wealthy how could you afford to do the job on its tiny salaray of £64,766 plus REASONABLE expenses
I kind of think such whining should prevent either MP from ever being an MP again. Seriously - how utterly divorced from reality are they that they can SAY things like this with a straight face?!
