To the Harridan who made far too much noise far too early in the morning while I’m trying to get my coffee.

Yes, the coffee in Starbucks is ludicrously pretentious. Yes, there is a little coffeeshop round the corner that does far better and cheaper coffee, I know because that’s my regular as well. Yes, we know it has been closed for refurbishment for a long time. Yes, we do live in dread that it’s going to become excessively trendy to compete with the Starbucks. Yes, paying nearly £5 for your morning cup of coffee is very expensive. I agree with all these points.

But what do you expect to achieve screeching all of this at the poor girl across the counter? She can’t change the names of the coffee. She can’t lower the prices. She can’t open our favourite coffee shop. She can’t stop it being redecorated. Nor can the manager. You have a beef with Starbucks? Go to Seattle (I think).

Or, and here’s a concept, don’t shop there. There are 4 bakeries and a McDonalds that do different approximations of coffee within 5 minute walking distance of Starbucks. You walked past 2. They’re much cheaper if not nearly so fancy or as nice – but hey, you pay for fancy and nice. Or if the money’s so important don’t order that Venti Macchiato and giant choc-chip cookie – you do not need these. They are luxury items. You can get by with a Nescafe black coffee or a McDonalds’ molten coffee. If you cannot afford a luxury or think it’s not worth the price – don’t buy it. It is that easy. I want a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce to take me to work every morning. I can’t afford it – I take the bus. I don’t bitch that Rolls are too expensive. I don’t need them, I have no bitching rights for not being able to afford what I don’t need. Nor does she.
