I know I know... waaaay too much delay

I'm working on it, I just got distracted by the arrival of teh new Merry Gentry book.

Wretched thing's lost me some money to the b/f though:

B/f: Reading porn again?
Me: It's NOT porn.
B/f: Yeah right, whatever. We know it's porn.
Me: It is not porn. It is a novel that just happens to have sex in it.
B/f: Yeah? Bet you a fiver someone gets naked before any plot comes along. In fact, I bet you another fiver that there's sex of some kind in the first 10 pages before any plot comes along. AND I bet another fiver that Merry gets a new sex partner before the end of the book.

Wretched book. I just lost £15. But it's not porn.

you tried to argue that Merry Gentry isn't porn??? You bet *money* that it isn't porn??!? Are you feeling ok? ;p

I know I know! It's the only book in the world where the elves are colour-coded so you can tell them apart! Oh, you can also tell by looking for their 'signiture mental/emotional problem'.

I actually like the books... honest... there IS plot there... alriught you have to look between the heaving breasts and naked faerie boys to find it, but it is there.

colour coded elves - you know that's the way to go ;) [I like them too, I just don;t quible about the porn part, and I won;t pay for them in hardback]

[identity profile] sparkindarkness.livejournal.com 2004-04-16 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
I have them on hardback because I got the original on hardback (being a fan of Anita Blake) then wanted to keep the set similar.

Waitwaitwait. This is a book by Laurell K. Hamilton, yes? Why, oh why did you accept that bet? Come on, you know it's porn!
(On a related note, I was talking with people about sex in fantasy books a few weeks ago. None of these people had read the Anita Blake books. Heh. Heh heh.)

[identity profile] sparkindarkness.livejournal.com 2004-04-14 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no, I refuse it isn't porn... hell, yes it is. But I was goaded! Goaded I tell you!

The first few books had little sex - seductive but no sex... then we reached Narcissus in Chains.

Merry Gentry STARTED like that. But ti si good.

Introduce these people to the slightly suggestively homoerotic porno fantasy of Anita Blake!

Oh you poor thing! I've read halfway through that book! You should have made him bet you a cup of coffee! it's cheaper. =^_-=
And it's not porn, uh... it erotica! that's the story and I'm sticking to it.

[identity profile] sparkindarkness.livejournal.com 2004-04-14 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I finished it, and declare it good anyway :) even if it is porn. Sorry erotica.

[identity profile] loralai.livejournal.com 2004-04-13 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
it's girly porn, distincly diffrent from just "porn." girly porn has plot and emotions and really intrest--.. ah-hem. right... pleading the 5th and going before i incriminate myself any more.

[identity profile] sparkindarkness.livejournal.com 2004-04-14 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I cling to that. It's WRITTEN porn, not pictures. See? Better.

[identity profile] loralai.livejournal.com 2004-04-14 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
and tasteful, damnit! erotica, i love. vulgar, not so much.

mmm... it has something to do with how women and men are wired differently. men are much more visually oriented while women are auditory oriented with a a big emphasis on stuff going on in headspace. that's why written stuff works so much better for us. or, at least that's what i've always found true.

[identity profile] sparkindarkness.livejournal.com 2004-04-14 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Tasteful - yes it sounds prudish, but you are right. There's a difference between erotica - because sex isn't wrong or shameful or something to hide - and full blown porn - because porn is born in the environment OF repression. Erotica is... well, a celebration of sex. An acceptance. An appreciation.

Porn is a desperate outlet for those trapped in the 'sex is wrong' mindset or society. Porn is wrapped in stifling robes of repression and shame - the dirty little secret, the mags hidden under the bed.

How to put it? Porn hides under the mattress. Erotica sits on the bookshelf.

(I'm not sure on the visual vs writing, since I'm a guy but see the appeal of both).

Will refrain from laughing and pointing. Glad the closest I get to those kinds of books is Piers Anthony. Dude has much plot smut.

Anyways, hope you make BF recompensate you *snirks again, mind in dirty place* Hope we get some fic out of this too. Could always say it's Research material for the damn Cliffhanger you left off on!

*tags you for angelfic too*

They are good books! I insist they are! They just happen to have... well, sex scenes in every chapter.

Yes, I must crusade against him to right this injustice! I do not read pron, I research so I can write my own porn!

Damn that came out wrong.
